EFES PRESS REVIEW - February 2006: Much new information about employee share ownership: in February 2006, this press review gathered 869 articles.
Which place and which role for employee ownership in the framework of takeovers of some large European groups? This point was widely discussed in very similar circumstances in Ireland, France and Austria. In Ireland, Eircom (telecom) could be taken over by Australian Babcock & Brown. However, Eircom's employees are the first shareholder with some 22% held through the ESOP Trust. Their position will be a key-element of the whole issue (30 articles). In Austria, Amag (aluminium) could be sold. What about the 20% shareholding of Amag's employees ? � hard discussions occurred (20 articles). France held hot discussions about the takeovers of Arcelor by Mittal (steel) and the merger of Gaz de France and Suez (energy), blocking Italian Enel project of a takeover of Suez. Could employee ownership be developed to anchor industries locally (nationally?) � this is French Government's position, hence new legislations favouring employee ownership (70 articles). Employee ownership issues are strongly growing in many countries. This press review gathered 500 articles in October and November last year and 712 articles in December. It is now 1.053 articles in January 2006.
This is mainly due to the fact that employee ownership is now at the agenda in Germany and in Austria.
Below our selection about themes (in Germany, Austria, USA, India, South Africa and Scotland) and our full press review.
Many articles are about three main themes: Angela Merkel's position in favour of stronger employee ownership in Germany (95 articles); employee ownership development in the framework of the privatisation of Austrian Post (94 articles); after General Motors in December, it is now Ford Motor who plans to cut up to 30,000 jobs and shutter 14 plants in a sweeping restructuring in the USA � however, Ford plans to help workers using buyouts (230 articles).
