PUBLIC HEARING IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

A European policy for employee ownership and participation

Employee ownership is a symbol of the social cohesion which Europe needs in this time. It has to be supported at all levels. This was the conclusion expressed by the European Commissioner for Internal Market Michel Barnier and the President of the Commission for Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament, Pervenche Berès, after the public hearing held in the European Parliament in Brussels by the European Federation of Employee Share Ownership. The hearing was attended by over 100 people, business representatives, unions, universities and members of the European Parliament.

A budget proposal was laid on the table of the Parliament for supporting the development of employee ownership in all European countries, in accordance with the recommendation of the European Economic and Social Committee, following the report by Alexander Graf von Schwerin, representative of the German trade union movement. The public hearing was held on invitation by Mrs Pervenche Berès with the support of the Group of Socialists and Democrats.
