EFES NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2008

A political roadmap for employee ownership in Europe
A political roadmap for Europe was proposed in the framework of the French Presidency of the European Union. What should be done at European level to promote the development of employee ownership?  Should we set up a European model? The picture of  employee share plans in large European companies is highly fascinating. It is a general movement, involving all large companies in all countries. However, when considering the European states, it is still everyone for himself. What can be done for Europe? Which European model? Download

Employee ownership for all
Employee ownership for all: This is the common theme linking all these articles about employee ownership in the world's press last month. Most discussions about the financial crisis, share options and executive pay. "Share options and participation for all" seems to be the way in France, Germany and others as well. Tax benefits for employee-owned companies are requested in Spain… See press review

Press review
Much new information about employee ownership in October 2008, with 1.719 articles in this press review (on which 876 involving stock options and 308 about workers' cooperatives). We made a selection of  62 remarkable articles in 13 countries: Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Spain, UK, USA.
China: Why China is set to ban state-owned enterprise employees from owning shares.
France: Hard discussions about stock options and executive pay. President Sarkozy calls for "stock options and participation for all". On the other hand, workers' cooperatives look full of dynamism. Finally, Professor Richard Freeman gives a presentation (in French!) about recent research works on employee ownership and corporate performance.
Germany: It is now the Parliament to discuss Government's project bringing stronger support for employee ownership.
Ireland: Key-positions for employee share ownership trusts in Aer Lingus and in Eircom (with the prospect of a fifth change of ownership in less than 10 years !)
Netherlands: Christian Trade Unions call for preference shares for employees.
United Kingdom: Executive pay set for radical overhaul.
USA: The Employee Ownership Foundation just posted a 2005 letter from Senator Barack Obama, commenting on the Employee Stock Ownership Plans Promotion and Improvement Act. The Foundation also announces the creation of the largest online library of university teaching materials on employee ownership. On the other hand, it is grilling for former Lehman Brothers chief executive. Finally, the well-known employee-owned company New Belgium Brewing named Top Small Workplace by the Wall Street Journal.
